About
Passing on the tradition
Teaching is something Dr. Hallberg considers her obligation. Her own mentors, all outstanding, instilled with her the importance of keeping the tradition of violin playing alive and vital in this troubled age. The mission is not just to prepare competent violinists but to mold better humans beings.
Outreach Teaching Options
String Academy of the Southwest offers lessons for beginners and advanced students. In addition to Dr. Priscilla Hallberg’s teaching strings at all levels, Gordon Hallberg specializes in teaching young students in small group lessons. Gordon Hallberg is a latecomer to string playing and teaching. Gordon’s earlier career was as a trombonist in organizations like the Marine Band (The President’s Own) and the Boston Symphony. After retirement from that career in 1982, he has transitioned to violin teaching and playing. He is certified and has taught in public schools in Texas, New Jersey and Iowa. Locally in Albuquerque he has taught strings for the New Mexico Philharmonic’s Youth Music Initiative on the Navajo Reservation at Tohajiilee, and for the String Academy of the Southwest. Gordon’s teaching philosophy comes from training in Suzuki and Koday systems. Basic music and violin concepts of pitch, rhythm, music reading and tone are taught in manageable steps with a spirit of fun.
Teaching photos below include some of Gordon’s favorites including his student “Fiddle” group String Beans, his Navajo students at Tohajiilee, and students from Kansas.
